Alex Gandy
I’ve been playing the WMC bag along with the moisture system since the start of August. The bag I had been playing in July was causing some pain in my left hand and my dad was playing the WMC bag so I tried it. It instantly got better. The cut of the bag leaves room for your left hand to move freely and the moisture system works as efficiently as anything I’ve tried, and is smaller and easy to keep under the arm. Several of my students have switched over since and I fully recommend the bag and moisture control system to any player of any skill level.
Alex began piping at age ten and had the good fortune of family for VERY high level instruction; his father Bruce Gandy, his mother Beverley Gandy (played with the 78th Fraser Highlanders in the 80’s) and his late grandfather Ronnie Rollo.
As a member of Field Marshal Montgomery he helped the band take 6 major prizes…including a World Championship in 2007 and a 2nd place at the Worlds in 2008. In his own words “I owe a lot to Pipe Major Richard Parkes and Pipe Sergeant Alastair Dunn. [My time with them] was an incredibly valuable learning experience.”
Alex just graduated from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, along with receiving The Order of Entrepreneurship from his school along with being named one of “Saint Mary’s Star Students”.
In the last few years, Alex has graduated from Junior piping to being a major force in North American Piping as well as in Scotland.

In 2011, he took the United States Piping Foundation contest, and has progressed from there winning both Gold Medals at the Winter Storm competition in Kansas City.
In 2012 he took 2nd place in the Marches and first in the Jig at the Argyllshire Gathering.
In 2013, he placed 4th in the Marches at Oban, and 2nd in the MSR A Grade at the Northern Meeting. This on top of winning the Bar to the Gold Medal at the Maxville Games, where he followed this up by winning all the major light music prizes.
Currently he is Pipe Major of the 78th Highlanders, Halifax Citadel Pipe Band based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in his non-piping life he is an Insurance Broker with TD Bank.
His appointment as pipe major makes him one of the youngest Pipe majors of a Grade 1 band.
